This visit to D' Big Mama is a part of my Chicken Rice Saga. My aim is to visit all of Perth's restaurants that offer Hainanese chicken rice on their menus. I always order the leg part if possible because it's much more tender than the breast part. These visits are unannounced and I do not gain anything from these blog posts, maybe except weight.

The first thing we noticed when we walked past the shop was the crowd! This is a Malaysian restaurant, the amount of dishes featured on the menu was quite over-whelming, and only make your lunch decisions that bit harder. But the crowd normally means a good sign so we were quite excited to order our chicken rice.

What a pleasant surprise! Despite the oddly-chopped chicken pieces, their tenderness and juiciness won us over. The soup was flavoursome, the chilli sauce was good and the soy sauce was a perfect balance. If only the rice wasn't over-powered with fat/butter it would have been a much more enjoyable eat. Nonetheless, a yummy meal was had and we would surely return in the future.

We have been to this restaurant a few times over the years and truthfully we have never been impressed. Despite calling themselves Singapore Chicken Rice, their chicken rice still needs a lot of improvement. There was no love put into the dish and it was very evident on the plate.

Unfortunately, there was nothing positive about this serve of chicken rice. Not the chicken, not the soy sauce, not the soup, not the chilli sauce, and definitely not the rice. The only saving grace for the shop itself is the friendly staff. Other dishes might be worth trying but if they can't even nail their specialty dish, it's hard to imagine how other items on the menu would be outstanding.

1. Boiled pork dumplings (12) $13
2. Boiled beef dumplings (12) $13 3. Boiled seafood & pork dumplings (12) $14 4. Steamed Shanghai pork dumplings (6) $10 Trivia: 42 dumplings | $50 | lunch | + Ian
When Ian and I first arrived at the restaurant there was only 1 other customer in store. The place had a cozy vibe despite and the waitress made us feel welcome straight away. There were only 4 choices of steamed/boiled dumplings to choose from so it made it easy to decide what we wanted. Our dumplings were ready pretty quickly and the pork dumplings came out after 12 minutes.
- FINAL RATING: 4.75 / 10 -
AVG PRICE: $1.19 / dumpling There was nothing about this restaurant that stood out to really guarantee a return, in terms of dumplings. Other items on the menu might be more interesting though and I wouldn't rule out that possibility.
